Interview with ÖRTFABRIKEN – the fruit of herbal passion
We are very proud to introduce Örtfabriken - a brand that recently joined Green Little Heart. In this interview you will learn about their passion for sustainability, herbs, health and spirituality!
We say welcome to Örtfabriken and all your herbal magic!
Tell us a little about your company and why you started it.
Answer: Örtfabriken is the fruit of my herbal passion. I have been interested in herbs and nature since I was little. The interest grew into passion when I as an adult started to experience health issues. I went deeper into the herbal world and the deeper I went the stronger my creative lust became. The response is Örtfabriken, a platform for herbs, health and spirituality.
How does leading a more natural life lead to a more sustainable life?
Answer: You are more in tune with nature, you slow down. You start listening more to yourself and you start understanding yourself more. The inner process starts reflecting the outer process. What you see inside yourself is what you see outside yourself. In nature. When you start taking care of yourself more, it becomes evident that you need to take care of what’s around you as well. We need nature and nature needs us. We are nature.
Can you tell us more about your growers in Latvia?
Answer: In Latvia there is a strong connection to the herbal world and herbal remedies are still a natural way of life. I have been living in Latvia for several years and it was natural to start a cooperation there. I am very happy for this opportunity. Our counterpart in Latvia is equally obsessed with herbs. They have the capacity to weave together passion with technology. They have a long experience and a lot of resources, for example in-house laboratory.

What led you to working with small-scale organic farms over other larger farms?
Answer: Örtfabriken’s ambition is to cooperate only with small-scale farms within the EU, as we within the EU are protected by stronger legislation. It is also easier to transport the herbs and avoid long distances.
Who makes your products and where?
Answer: The herbs are grown by farmers in different locations. For example, our tincture Happy Immunity are made of Propolis from beekeepers in Latvia. The Elecampane root and Elderberries are also from Latvia.
In the factories that you use, how do you control their sustainability commitments?
Answer: We do visits on location. We know our producers follow certain standards. When visiting them, we are able to see how this works in reality. Örtfabriken has also been working a lot with storage and transportation of our tinctures. We cooperate with a warehouse close to Jönköping. They are committed to big investments, making the shift to electric driven machines and cars. You can read about how we work with sustainability here.

Which type of materials are you using in your production process?
Answer: Tinctures are a natural product and a handicraft. We use herbs and alcohol, nothing else. Then the magic begins. The tincture will macerate from 4 to 6 weeks and will then be ready. Here you can read more of how to make a tincture.
What was the inspiration for your podcast, Herbal Talks? Can you tell us more about your podcast?
Answer: Herbal Talks is my baby. It allows me and my friend Agnes from Nordiska Örter to have all those nerdy talks about herbs, health and spirituality as we long to have. You will find Herbal Talks on Youtube.
Which ones are your bestseller products? Which products are your personal favorites?
Answer: Our bestsellers are Happy Bitters and Happy&Relaxed. My favourite is Fantastic Fungi!
Which certifications do you have and/or strive to have in relation to your company and the production facilities?
Answer: Most of our herbs and the alcohol is from organic origin. My dream is to eco-certify all our tinctures. That will be possible in the future when we have more money to invest.
How do you tackle your environmental impact? What are your next steps in terms of lowering your impact?
Answer: The next step is to produce more of the tinctures in Sweden. That will be awesome! I will cooperate with friends growing herbs and I will buy Swedish produced alcohol. It is still on a visionary stage, but with hard work and some magic it will become a reality.
